since the bureau of trails decided not to accept our existing trail map this year, i need to make a new one. i'm thinking about buying a new handheld gps, but man they're spendy. it's not something i would use too often so i don't want to spend a ton of money. i need to be able to record the trail/track, and get it on my computer so i can send it off to the state. any recommendations? something that'll do the job but won't require me to buy additional maps or software to do it.

also looking at backcountry navigator for my phone. this app looks like it might be able to do what i need, and it's cheap. has anyone used it to make a map?

I have the Garmin Oregon 450 and really like it. It can be had for well under $300 these days. And it does everything you can imagine, but take photos. You can get free, legal topo maps for it online.

For No money, you could download an app from EveryTrail.com. With that app, you can record your tracks and easily upload them to EveryTrail.com to view and save them. You can overlay them on a Google map, topo map, or satellite imagery. You can attach commentary and photos to the waypoints on their site as well. When you are done, you can export the files to whatever you want.

Well worth a look. Not the most intuitive app, but free and easy.

I have a Garmin Oregon 550 for tracking where we ride and loading the track logs back into some mapping software. When I picked it up I found a few places with trail maps online so perhaps the tracking has been done already for you. Check out backwoodsgpstrails.com or gpstrailmasters.com. If you need any help tracking the trails yourself then let me know.

The Garmin program that comes with the units has a pretty good map that you can print from with your track overlays. There's a setting that you can change for more or less detail.
